You pull a blouse from the closet and it’s creased, and the iron is the last thing you feel like dragging out. You don’t have to.
For everyday wrinkles there are faster ways, and most of them use things you already have.
The Dryer Trick
Put the wrinkled item in the dryer with a damp washcloth or two ice cubes. Run it on medium heat for 10 to 15 minutes. The moisture turns to steam and relaxes the wrinkles. Take it out right away and hang it up.
The Shower Trick
Hang the item on a hanger in the bathroom, away from the water, while you take a hot shower with the door closed. Fifteen minutes of steam smooths light wrinkles. Smooth the fabric with your hands and let it dry before you put it on.
The Spray Trick
Mix 2 cups of water with 1 teaspoon of hair conditioner or a tablespoon of white vinegar in a spray bottle. Mist the garment lightly, pull it gently flat with your hands, and hang it to dry.
The Damp Towel Trick
Lay the garment on a flat surface. Put a damp towel on top and press down with your hands, smoothing as you go. Let it dry flat.
Which Fabric?
- Cotton and linen: the dryer trick or the spray.
- Polyester and blends: the dryer on low. They wrinkle less and release easily.
- Silk, wool and rayon: the shower steam only. Skip the dryer.
Always read the care label first.
Stop Wrinkles Before They Start
- Take clothes out of the dryer as soon as it stops.
- Don’t overfill the washer or dryer.
- Shake each piece before you hang it.
- Fold along the seams, not across the front.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a hair dryer work?
Yes. Dampen the wrinkle slightly and blow warm air on it from a few inches away while you pull the fabric flat.
Will vinegar make my clothes smell?
No. The smell is gone once the fabric dries.
Can I do this with dress pants?
For a sharp crease you still need an iron. For general wrinkles, the dryer trick works well.
Ten minutes and a damp washcloth can save you from the ironing board.
