How to Make a Fly Trap From a Plastic Bottle (and What to Put Inside)

When flies take over the patio, you don’t need a store-bought trap. An empty plastic bottle and a sweet, sour bait will catch a surprising number of them.

What You Need

  • 1 empty plastic bottle (1 or 2 liter)
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon dry yeast (optional, but it helps)
  • A few drops of dish soap

How to Build It

  1. Cut the bottle about one third of the way down from the top.
  2. Stir the sugar into the warm water in the bottom part. Add the vinegar and the yeast.
  3. Add a few drops of dish soap. This breaks the surface of the liquid so flies sink instead of standing on it.
  4. Turn the top piece upside down, with the cap off, and set it into the bottom like a funnel. Tape the edge if it’s loose.

Flies follow the smell down the funnel and can’t find their way back out.

Where to Put It

  • A few feet away from where you sit, not on the table. The trap draws flies toward it.
  • In a sunny, warm spot. Warmth helps the bait ferment and smell stronger.
  • Near the trash cans or the compost, where flies gather.

Keep It Working

  • Empty and refill it every 5 to 7 days, or sooner if it’s full.
  • For house flies, a small piece of overripe fruit in the liquid makes the bait stronger.
  • For fruit flies indoors, use a small jar with cider vinegar and dish soap instead.

The Bigger Fix

A trap catches flies, but it doesn’t stop new ones. Keep trash cans closed, pick up pet waste, and rinse recycling. Fewer smells mean fewer flies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the trap attract more flies to my yard?

It pulls in the flies already nearby. That’s why it should sit away from the seating area.

Is it safe around pets and kids?

The ingredients are food-safe, but place it where it won’t be knocked over.

Why add dish soap?

Without it, flies can land on the liquid and fly off again.
