Hot cocoa bombs look like something from a candy shop, and they are mostly patience. Melted chocolate is brushed into silicone half-sphere molds, the shells are filled with cocoa mix and mini marshmallows, and two halves are sealed together with a warm plate. Drop one in a mug, pour hot milk over it, and it opens up with the marshmallows floating out.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Three ingredients.
  • Make them a week ahead for gifts.
  • A show when they melt open.

What You Need

  • 12 oz chocolate melting wafers (milk or semisweet)
  • 6 packets hot cocoa mix (about 2 tbsp each)
  • 1 cup mini marshmallows
  • sprinkles or white chocolate drizzle (optional)

Coating the molds with chocolate

How to Make Hot Cocoa Bombs

  1. Melt the chocolate wafers in the microwave in 30-second bursts, stirring until smooth.
  2. Spoon a tablespoon into each cavity of a silicone half-sphere mold and brush it up the sides evenly. Chill 10 minutes, then brush on a second coat and chill 20 minutes.
  3. Pop the shells out gently. Fill half of them with 2 tablespoons cocoa mix and a spoon of mini marshmallows.
  4. Warm a plate in the microwave 1 minute. Set an empty shell rim-down on it for 2 seconds, then press it onto a filled shell to seal.
  5. Drizzle with melted chocolate or add sprinkles. Chill 10 minutes.
  6. To serve, set a bomb in a mug and pour 8 ounces of hot milk over it. Stir.

Tips

  • Two thin coats make a shell that holds together.
  • Keep the shells cold and handle them quickly so fingerprints do not melt them.
  • Wrap each in cellophane with a ribbon for gifts.

Serving and Storing

Store in a cool place in an airtight container up to 2 weeks.
