The inside of my oven door had a brown film on it that had been building up for years. Oven cleaner took the top layer off and left the rest.
A dishwasher tablet and a cup of hot water did what the spray could not.
What You Need
One dishwasher tablet — the solid pressed kind, not a gel pack. A mug of hot water. That is it.
Powder tablets work best because they hold their shape while you scrub. A liquid pod bursts and runs everywhere.
How to Do It
Dip the tablet in hot water for a few seconds. Not long enough to dissolve it — just long enough to soften the outside.
Rub it flat against the glass. Hold it like a bar of soap and work in small circles. The tablet acts as its own scouring block and releases detergent as it wears down.
Keep redipping. When it stops gliding, back in the water for a second.
Wipe with a damp cloth, then a dry one. The brown comes off on the cloth, not the glass.
One tablet is usually enough for a whole door. Ten minutes of work.
Why It Works
Baked-on oven grease is fat that has polymerized — it has gone hard and stopped behaving like grease. Ordinary detergent slides over it.
Dishwasher tablets contain enzymes and a mild alkali built for exactly this: cooked-on food residue. And because the tablet is a solid block, you get chemistry and gentle abrasion at the same time, which is the combination the spray is missing.
The abrasion is soft enough that it will not scratch oven glass. It is not sandpaper — it crumbles as you use it.
Where Else It Works
Glass shower doors. Same problem, different film. Works just as well on soap scum.
The bottom of a burnt pan. Stainless steel only.
Oven racks. Or drop a tablet in a bath of hot water and soak them.
Ceramic stovetop rings. Light pressure.
Where Not to Use It
Not on non-stick. Not on anodized aluminum — the alkali discolors it. Not on painted surfaces or the oven’s outer enamel if it is glossy.
And wear gloves. Dishwasher detergent is hard on skin, and rubbing a wet tablet with bare hands for ten minutes will leave them raw.
Try It Once
A tablet costs pennies and the oven door is the easiest place to see the difference.
Do half the door, then stand back and look at the line down the middle.
