I Told My Sister I’m Not Driving Four Hours for Thanksgiving This Year. This Is What Happened

A small Thanksgiving dinner at home

For eleven years, Thanksgiving meant loading the car before sunrise, four hours on the highway with a pie on my lap, and four hours home in the dark. My sister hosts. She has the big house. Nobody ever asked whether the drive was getting harder for us.

This year, in October, I told her: I love you, and I’m not making the drive this Thanksgiving. I’d like to stay home.

The First Reaction

She was quiet, and then she was hurt. “So you’re just not coming?”

I told her the truth. The drive wears me out for days. My husband’s back is not what it was. And I had never once cooked a Thanksgiving turkey in my own kitchen.

What Happened Next

She called back the next evening. She had thought about it. “I never knew it was that hard on you,” she said. “You never said.”

She was right. I never had.

We made a plan together. This year we each stay home, and we call during dessert so the cousins can wave at each other. Next year they come to us. After that we take turns, and the long drive is shared instead of always being mine.

My first Thanksgiving at home was small. Six of us, a twelve-pound turkey, and nobody watching the clock. I didn’t know how much I needed it.

How to Say It

  • Say it early. October, not the week before.
  • Give the real reason. People can’t fix what they don’t know.
  • Offer something. A turn, a visit on another weekend, a phone call during dessert.
  • Don’t apologize for being tired. It’s a fact, not a failing.

Fair Ways to Share a Long Trip

  • Take turns hosting, year by year.
  • Meet in the middle at a restaurant or a rented hall.
  • Split the holidays. One family travels for Thanksgiving, the other for Christmas.
  • Stay the night. A drive is easier with a bed at the end of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if the family is angry?

Give it a few days. Hurt usually comes first, and understanding follows.

Isn’t tradition important?

It is. But a tradition that only one family carries isn’t shared.

What about older parents who can’t travel?

Then the holiday goes to them, and everyone else takes turns bringing the food.

The road is still there next year. This year, I’m home.
