How to Get Candle Wax Out of a Tablecloth (and Off the Table)

Candle wax spilled on a tablecloth

It happens at every holiday dinner. Someone bumps the table, a candle tips, and there is a puddle of wax on the tablecloth your mother gave you.

Don’t scrub it and don’t panic. Wax is one of the easier spills to fix, as long as you do things in the right order.

Step 1: Let It Harden

Never wipe warm wax. That pushes it deeper into the fabric. Let it cool, or speed it up with a bag of ice or a few minutes in the freezer.

Step 2: Lift Off What You Can

Bend the fabric so the hard wax cracks, then lift the pieces off with a dull butter knife or the edge of a spoon. Most of it will pop right off.

Step 3: Melt Out the Rest

  1. Lay the cloth on an ironing board with a plain brown paper bag or a paper towel under the stain and another on top.
  2. Set the iron to low, with no steam.
  3. Press the iron on the paper for a few seconds. The wax melts and soaks into the paper.
  4. Move to a clean spot on the paper and repeat until no more wax comes up.

Step 4: Treat Any Color Left Behind

Colored candles can leave a dye mark. Dab on a little liquid laundry detergent or stain remover, let it sit 15 minutes, then wash in the warmest water the fabric allows. Check that the mark is gone before you put it in the dryer. Heat sets stains.

Wax on the Table Itself

  • Wood: let it harden, then push it off with a plastic card. Warm any thin film with a hair dryer on low and wipe with a soft cloth.
  • Glass: harden with ice and lift it off.
  • Don’t use a metal blade on wood or glass. It scratches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this work on lace or delicate linen?

Yes, with a cooler iron and a press cloth. Go slowly.

Can I use a hair dryer instead of an iron?

Yes. Warm the wax and blot with paper towels. It takes a little longer.

What about printed paper bags?

Use plain paper only. Ink can transfer to the fabric.

Ice first, iron second, wash last. Your tablecloth will be ready for the next holiday.
