Every time I pulled a sheet of foil, the whole roll came flying out of the box with it. I’d been fighting that box for thirty years.
Then my granddaughter turned the box around and pushed in a little flap on the end. The roll stayed put.
What the Tabs Do
Look at both short ends of your foil box. Many brands have a small perforated flap on each end, often marked “Press here to lock end.”
When you push the flap in, it presses against the cardboard tube inside and holds the roll in place. Now when you pull a sheet, the foil unrolls but the roll stays in the box.
How to Use Them
- Open the box as usual.
- Find the tab on each end. It’s usually a small circle or half-moon outline.
- Press it in with your thumb until it pokes into the hollow tube.
- Do both ends for the best grip.
- Pull your foil and tear it on the box’s cutting edge.
Check Your Other Boxes
Many plastic wrap and wax paper boxes have the same lock tabs. If yours doesn’t, a rubber band around the box and roll works in a pinch.
Frequently Asked Questions
My box doesn’t have tabs. Why?
Not every brand or size includes them. Store brands vary.
Will the roll still turn?
Yes. The tab holds the tube in place, and the foil still unrolls smoothly.
What about the shiny side?
For regular foil, it doesn’t matter which side faces the food. Both sides work the same.
Thirty years of chasing the foil roll across the counter, solved by one little push.
