How to Clean Burnt-On Food From Your Slow Cooker (No Scrubbing)

After a pot of chili, my slow cooker had a brown baked-on ring that wouldn’t budge. I scrubbed until my arm hurt. My friend told me to let the slow cooker clean itself.

The Easy Way

  1. Fill the crock with warm water up past the burnt line.
  2. Add a few spoonfuls of baking soda and a squirt of dish soap.
  3. Put the lid on and set it to low for a couple of hours.
  4. Let it cool, then wipe. The stuck food loosens and wipes away.

For Stubborn Spots

Make a paste of baking soda and a little water, spread it on the spot, let it sit, then wipe with a soft sponge.

What to Avoid

  • Don’t use steel wool or harsh scrubbers. They can scratch the glaze.
  • Don’t pour cold water into a hot crock. A sudden temperature change can crack it.
  • Never put the heating base in water. Only the removable crock gets washed.

Keep It Easy Next Time

  • Use a slow cooker liner or a light coat of cooking spray.
  • Soak the crock right after serving.
