This 5-ingredient Swiss cheese chicken is creamy, cozy, and practically makes itself in the Slow Cooker. Tender chicken, melted Swiss, savory stuffing, and a rich sauce come together for an easy dinner. It is not fancy, but it doesn’t need to be when hunger strikes.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Easy Slow Cooker dinner — minimal prep and hands-off cooking.
  • Just five ingredients — chicken, Swiss cheese, soup, milk, and stuffing mix.
  • Creamy and comforting — melted Swiss and condensed soup create a rich sauce.
  • Feeds six with little fuss — perfect for a cozy supper or leftovers.

Ingredient Notes

Boneless, skinless chicken breasts are what make this simple and tidy. Try to choose breasts that are roughly similar in size so the chicken cooks evenly. No pounding or extra prep is needed.

For the Swiss cheese, regular deli-style slices work beautifully. Use the kind that comes in a package, not a fancy cave-aged wedge. The mild, nutty Swiss flavor is what works here, and it melts into the sauce without taking over.

Condensed cream of chicken soup is the backbone of the gravy. Any standard 10.5-ounce can will do.

The milk loosens the soup just enough. 2% milk works well, and whole milk is fine too.

And then there’s the seasoned herb stuffing mix. This is not homemade stuffing, so don’t overthink it. A bag or box of seasoned herb stuffing mix makes that savory top layer and gives the sauce its flavor. It already has plenty of seasoning. Do not add salt out of habit.

Ingredients

  • 6 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 6 slices Swiss cheese
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) condensed cream of chicken soup
  • 1/4 cup milk, whatever kind you’ve got open is fine
  • 2 cups seasoned herb stuffing mix

Instructions

Lightly coat the inside of your Slow Cooker with cooking spray or rub it with a little butter for easier cleanup later. Arrange the 6 chicken breasts in an even layer across the bottom.

Lay 1 slice of Swiss cheese over each chicken breast. It does not have to look perfect. A corner may fold over, or one slice may be a little smaller than the others.

In a small bowl, stir together the condensed cream of chicken soup and the 1/4 cup milk until smooth. It will look thick at first, then loosen up. Spoon that mixture over the cheese, spreading it gently so most of the chicken is covered. Don’t worry if it seems like a lot of sauce; that is the whole point.

Sprinkle the 2 cups of seasoned herb stuffing mix evenly over the top. Try not to stir it in. You want that stuffing layer sitting up there like a little savory roof, even though it will soften as it cooks.

Cover and cook on low for 6 to 7 hours or on high for 3 to 4 hours, until the chicken is tender and cooked through. Slow cookers vary more than expected.

Let the chicken rest in the slow cooker for about 5 minutes once it is done. Then spoon plenty of the creamy sauce from the bottom over each piece before serving. That sauce is rich, so it works well over mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, or white rice. Green beans or sweet corn alongside are good too—something plain and green, if balance is the goal.

Variations

The basic version works well exactly as written. Boneless, skinless chicken thighs can be used instead, and they stay even more tender. Trim them first, cook them until fully done, and serve the whole thing over rice.

If you want the stuffing to have a little more color and texture, you can transfer the cooked portions to an Oven-safe dish and broil them briefly at the end. Keep an eye on it, though. Broilers go from “nice golden top” to “why does the kitchen smell like regret?” in about forty seconds.

Adding extra cheese can make the sauce heavier than intended. Not bad, exactly. Just a little much.

Storage & Reheating

Leftovers keep well in a covered container in the refrigerator for a few days. Store the chicken with plenty of sauce so it doesn’t dry out. The stuffing gets softer by the next day, but it becomes sort of a creamy chicken-and-stuffing situation, which is not glamorous language but is accurate.

Reheat individual portions gently in the microwave, covered loosely, until hot throughout. Add a spoonful of the sauce over the chicken before reheating if possible. For a larger amount, warm it in a covered baking dish at a moderate Oven temperature until heated through.

This is especially good tucked into a lunch container with rice or mashed potatoes.

Final Notes

This slow cooker chicken stretches easily and smells like a dinner planned ahead.

And if it wasn’t planned ahead, the slow cooker is forgiving.
