Ingredients

  • 1 loaf white sandwich bread sliced, enough to fill a 9x13-inch baking dish
  • 1 (8 oz) package cream cheese room temperature
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar divided
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup butter melted, plus enough to lightly grease the baking dish

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter.
  • Cut the crusts off the slices of white sandwich bread, discarding them or saving them for another use.
  • Flatten each crustless bread slice with a rolling pin until it is thin and even.
  • In a medium bowl, beat the room-temperature cream cheese until smooth, then add the egg and 1/4 cup of the granulated sugar and mix until fully combined and creamy.
  • Spread some of the cream cheese mixture in a fairly even layer over each flattened slice of bread, avoiding piling it on too thick.
  • Roll each bread slice up into a small log, then cut each roll in half or into thirds.
  • Place the pieces seam-side down in the prepared baking dish, keeping them tucked fairly close together but not crammed in.
  • Generously brush all the rolls with the melted butter, covering the tops and little creases as best you can.
  • In a small bowl, combine the remaining 1/2 cup sugar with the cinnamon, then sprinkle the cinnamon sugar generously over the buttered rolls.
  • Bake for 15 to 18 minutes, until the Sugar Snails are golden in color and the tops look lightly crisp, then serve warm.

Notes

Sugar Snails are best served warm from the oven when the tops are crisp and the cream cheese filling is soft. Let leftovers cool, then store covered in the refrigerator for a few days; reheat in the microwave until warmed through or use the oven to bring back some crispness. Do not leave them sitting out all day because of the cream cheese and egg filling.
