Ingredients

  • apples Granny Smith, Fuji, Honeycrisp, or a mix; enough for about 8 servings
  • caramel sauce Smucker’s or chilled caramel dip from the produce section
  • chocolate prepared chocolate sauce or melting chocolate warmed until smooth
  • mini marshmallows for topping
  • mini M&M’s for topping
  • shredded coconut for topping
  • almond slivers for topping
  • crushed peanuts for topping
  • chocolate chips for topping
  • crushed graham crackers for topping
  • crushed Oreos for topping
  • crushed pretzels for topping
  • sprinkles for topping
  • lollipop sticks or small skewers for serving the apple slices

Instructions

  • Set out your toppings in a muffin tin or small bowls so everything is ready before you cut the apples.
  • Slice the apples into sturdy wedges, using an apple slicer or corer if desired for faster, more even pieces.
  • If serving right away, arrange the apple slices on a platter or cutting board; if they need to wait, soak them in a salt water bath for 10 minutes, then rinse and dry them very well before serving.
  • Warm the caramel sauce just until it is easy to dip into, and prepare the melted chocolate if using; place sauces in small bowls or cups deep enough for dipping.
  • Press a lollipop stick or small skewer into each apple slice, or skip the sticks and let everyone use a fork if preferred.
  • Dip each apple slice into caramel or chocolate, then sprinkle on toppings while the sauce is still sticky; drizzle one sauce over the other if you want both caramel and chocolate.
  • Serve right away while the apples are crisp and the toppings are still in place, with plenty of napkins nearby.

Notes

This dessert bar is best served fresh. Store leftover plain apple slices covered in the refrigerator and use within a day or so. Assembled caramel apple slices can be stored in a single layer in a covered container in the fridge, but the caramel may firm up and toppings may soften; do not reheat assembled slices, just let them sit out for a few minutes before eating.
