Flies dive-bombing your dinner, mosquitoes turning your ankles into an all-you-can-eat buffet, a rogue cockroach making you rethink walking barefoot… pests aren’t just annoying, they can be downright gross and sometimes dangerous.
But here’s the thing — you don’t have to spray your house with harsh chemicals to win the battle. You can whip up a few simple, surprisingly effective fixes with stuff you probably already have in your pantry. And bonus? They’re cheap, safe, and won’t make your kitchen smell like a science lab.
I’ve got three go-to recipes for you: a homemade mosquito trap, a bay leaf and clove spray for the stubborn crawlers and fliers, and a gentle bug repellent you can spritz right on your skin.
1. Homemade Mosquito Trap
Mosquitoes are sneaky little things, but they can’t resist carbon dioxide — it’s basically their GPS signal for finding us. This trap takes advantage of that.
You’ll need:
-
1 cup water
-
1/4 cup brown sugar
-
1 gram yeast
-
1 empty 2-liter plastic bottle
How to make it:
-
Cut the bottle in half (bottom half bigger).
-
Stir the brown sugar into hot water until it dissolves, then let it cool.
-
Pour the sugar water into the bottom half of the bottle.
-
Sprinkle in the yeast — no stirring. It’ll start giving off carbon dioxide.
-
Flip the top half upside down and fit it into the bottom, like a funnel.
-
Wrap the outside in something black (mosquitoes love dark colors), but leave the top open.
-
Tuck the trap in a dark, damp corner where mosquitoes hang out.
-
Change the mix every couple of weeks.
It’s a little gross to check, but it works.
2. Bay Leaf & Clove Spray (For Flies and Roaches)
This one’s a double win — it smells kind of like you’ve been cooking something warm and cozy, but pests absolutely hate it.
You’ll need:
-
10–15 bay leaves
-
10–15 whole cloves
-
2 cups water
How to make it:
-
Boil the water in a small pot.
-
Add the bay leaves and cloves.
-
Turn down the heat and let it simmer for about an hour so all that natural oil infuses the water.
-
Let it cool completely.
-
Strain it into a spray bottle.
-
Spray along baseboards, under the sink, behind appliances — anywhere you’ve spotted uninvited guests.
Roaches, especially, can’t stand the smell.
3. Gentle All-Purpose Bug Repellent
This is the one you can actually spray on yourself before sitting outside in the evening — or around doorways and windows so bugs think twice before coming in.
You’ll need:
-
1 cup witch hazel
-
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
-
30–40 drops essential oils (citronella, eucalyptus, lavender — pick your favorite combo)
How to make it:
-
Pour everything into a spray bottle.
-
Shake it before each use (oils tend to separate).
-
Lightly spritz on exposed skin or around areas you want to protect.
It smells nice to us, but to mosquitoes, it’s like “Nope, not today.”
Why They Work
-
Mosquito trap: Mosquitoes follow the CO₂ trail straight into the bottle and can’t get back out.
-
Bay leaf & clove spray: Strong scents confuse pests’ sense of smell and make the area unappealing.
-
Repellent spray: Essential oils are natural bug deterrents, but safe for you (just keep away from cats, since they’re sensitive to oils).
Final Thought
You don’t need a hazmat suit and a gallon of chemical spray to deal with pests. These three DIY fixes are cheap, easy, and they actually work. Plus, they give you a little satisfaction — that “Ha! Outsmarted you!” feeling every time you check a trap or see a roach hightail it in the other direction.
