Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk or heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon optional
  • pinch of salt
  • 8 slices thick-cut bread brioche, challah, or French bread
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter for cooking
  • maple syrup for serving
  • powdered sugar for serving
  • fresh berries for serving

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together eggs, milk or cream, sugar, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon (optional), and a pinch of salt until smooth.
  • Preheat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat. Add 1 tablespoon of butter and let it melt completely. Dip a slice of bread into the egg mixture, letting each side soak for a few seconds. Ensure it is evenly coated but not overly saturated.
  • Place the soaked bread onto the hot skillet or griddle. Cook each side for 2-3 minutes, or until golden brown and slightly crispy. Add more butter as needed for additional batches and repeat the process with the remaining slices.
  • Serve the French toast warm with desired toppings such as maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh berries, or whipped cream. Enjoy immediately for the best taste and texture.

Notes

For an extra indulgent twist, try using flavored syrups, chocolate chips, or adding a dusting of cocoa powder. Day-old bread works best as it absorbs the batter without becoming overly soggy.
