Slow Cooker Spicy Orange General Tso’s Chicken

Ingredients
  

  • 1.5 pounds boneless chicken breasts chopped into bite-sized chunks
  • 1/4 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup chicken broth vegetable broth works too
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce or tamari for gluten-free
  • 1/4 cup orange juice fresh is best
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar light or dark
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon fresh ginger minced
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes adjust to taste
  • Green onions sliced, for garnish
  • Sesame seeds for garnish

Instructions
 

  • In a medium bowl, mix the cornstarch, salt, and pepper. Add the chicken chunks and toss to coat evenly.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the chicken in a single layer and sear for 1–2 minutes without stirring, then flip and brown the other sides. The chicken does not need to be cooked through.
  • In a bowl or large measuring cup, whisk together the chicken broth, soy sauce, orange juice, hoisin sauce, brown sugar, minced garlic, minced ginger, and red pepper flakes.
  • Transfer the browned chicken to your slow cooker. Pour the sauce mixture over the chicken and gently stir to coat all the pieces.
  • Cover and cook on low for 4–5 hours, or until the chicken is tender and cooked through.
  • Serve the chicken over warm rice, and garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds. Enjoy every bite!

Notes

For extra zest, you can add a bit of orange zest to the sauce. Adjust the red pepper flakes to make it as mild or fiery as you like.
