Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef browned and drained
  • 1/2 yellow onion finely chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • buns for serving, soft ones if you can swing it
  • dill pickle chips for serving
  • yellow mustard for serving, as desired

Instructions

  • Brown the 2 pounds of ground beef in a skillet over medium heat, breaking it up fairly fine as it cooks, then drain off the grease once it is cooked through.
  • Add the browned, drained beef to the slow cooker with the finely chopped onion, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, yellow mustard, sugar, salt, and black pepper.
  • Stir everything well so the mustard is worked in and the seasonings are evenly distributed.
  • Cover and cook on low for 6 hours.
  • Stir the beef halfway through the cook time, around the 3-hour mark, to keep the meat evenly seasoned and mingled with the broth.
  • When the 6 hours are up, stir the beef once more and serve it hot on buns with dill pickle chips and extra yellow mustard as desired.

Notes

Store leftover Maid-Rite meat separately from the buns and pickles in an airtight container in the refrigerator for a few days. Reheat gently in a saucepan over low heat or in a covered microwave-safe dish until hot, stirring as it heats. If the beef seems dry, add a small splash of beef broth.
