Ingredients

  • 2 cans baked beans in tomato sauce 28 oz each, undrained
  • 1 lb ground beef 80–85% lean
  • 1 cup barbecue sauce
  • 2 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese divided
  • 16 oz frozen tater tots

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Brown the ground beef in a skillet over medium-high heat for 6–8 minutes, breaking it apart as it cooks.
  • Drain the excess fat from the cooked beef.
  • Add the baked beans, cooked ground beef, and barbecue sauce directly to the prepared baking dish.
  • Stir everything together until evenly combined, then spread into a flat layer.
  • Sprinkle 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the bean and beef mixture.
  • Arrange the frozen tater tots in a single layer over the top, covering the surface completely.
  • Bake uncovered for 35–40 minutes, until the tater tots are golden and crisp and the edges are bubbling.
  • Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup cheddar cheese over the tater tots.
  • Return the casserole to the oven for 5–10 minutes, until the cheese is melted.
  • Let the casserole rest for at least 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Keep the tater tots in a tight single layer so the cheese underneath does not burn. Letting it rest helps the casserole set before scooping.
