Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb ground beef 80–85% lean
  • 1 packet dry onion soup mix about 1 oz
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup 10.5 oz
  • 1/2 cup whole milk plus a little more if needed

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • In a large bowl, gently combine the ground beef and dry onion soup mix until evenly distributed.
  • Divide the mixture into 6 large or 8 smaller portions.
  • Shape each portion into a flat oval patty about 3/4 inch thick.
  • Arrange the patties in a single layer in the prepared baking dish.
  • In the same bowl, whisk together the condensed cream of mushroom soup and whole milk until smooth and pourable.
  • Pour the soup mixture evenly over the patties, coating each one.
  • Cover the baking dish tightly with foil.
  • Bake covered for 35–40 minutes.
  • Remove the foil and bake uncovered for another 5–10 minutes, until the gravy thickens slightly and the patties reach 160°F internally.
  • Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving.
  • Spoon the gravy over each patty and serve with mashed potatoes, buttered egg noodles, or rolls.

Notes

Avoid overmixing the beef so the patties stay tender. Use 80–85% lean beef for the best flavor and texture.
