Homemade Tomato Sauce

A classic and versatile sauce made with ripe tomatoes, garlic, and herbs, simmered to perfection. Ideal for pasta, pizza, or as a base for other dishes, this homemade tomato sauce offers rich flavor with simple ingredients.

Ingredients
  

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 onion medium, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 2 lbs tomatoes fresh, peeled and chopped or canned crushed
  • 1 tsp salt or to taste
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper freshly ground
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/2 cup fresh basil chopped (or 1 tbsp dried basil)
  • 1 tsp sugar optional, to balance acidity

Instructions
 

  • Heat olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
  • Add chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
  • Add the tomatoes, salt, pepper, oregano, and sugar (if using). Stir to combine.
  • Reduce heat to low and simmer uncovered for 35–40 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened.
  • Stir in chopped fresh basil during the last 5 minutes of cooking.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Use immediately or cool and store.

Notes

This sauce can be frozen for up to 3 months. Try adding a pinch of chili flakes for extra heat.
