Ham and Potato Au Gratin

Ingredients
  

  • 4 cups russet potatoes peeled and thinly sliced
  • 2 cups cooked ham diced
  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups milk preferably whole milk
  • 1 1/2 cups cheddar cheese shredded
  • 1/2 tsp salt or to taste
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp garlic powder

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and lightly grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Whisk in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes until lightly golden.
  • Gradually whisk in milk, stirring constantly until sauce thickens. Add salt, pepper, garlic powder, and 1 cup of shredded cheese. Stir until smooth and melted.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared dish. Top with half the diced ham and pour half the cheese sauce over. Repeat with remaining ingredients.
  • Sprinkle remaining 1/2 cup of cheese on top and cover dish with foil.
  • Bake covered for 40 minutes. Remove foil and bake an additional 20 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  • Let rest for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

Swap in Gruyère cheese for a gourmet twist or add chopped green onions for extra flavor.
