Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tbsp fresh ginger grated
  • 1 cup celery chopped
  • 1 cup carrots julienned or roughly cut
  • 3 cups cabbage thinly sliced
  • 8 oz mushrooms sliced
  • 8 oz cooked chow mein noodles or spaghetti
  • 3 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce
  • 1 tsp sesame oil
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tbsp cornstarch
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese grated, optional
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • green onions or chives for garnish

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F and grease a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it apart, until browned and fully cooked.
  • Add the onion, garlic, and ginger to the skillet and cook for about 5 minutes, until the onion is soft and translucent.
  • Stir in the celery and carrots and cook for a few minutes to begin softening.
  • Add the cabbage and mushrooms and cook, stirring often, until the vegetables wilt down.
  • In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth, soy sauce, oyster sauce, sesame oil, and cornstarch until smooth.
  • Pour the sauce mixture into the skillet and stir well.
  • Simmer for 2–3 minutes, until the sauce thickens slightly.
  • Add the cooked noodles and toss gently until everything is evenly combined.
  • Transfer the mixture to the prepared baking dish.
  • Top with grated cheddar cheese, if using.
  • Bake for 20–25 minutes, until hot and bubbly and the cheese is lightly golden at the edges.
  • Let the casserole rest for 5 minutes before serving.
  • Garnish with green onions or chives and serve warm.

Notes

Use chow mein noodles for the most classic texture, or spaghetti for an easy swap. Add extra ginger or a pinch of red pepper flakes for more bold flavor.
