German Streusel Coffee Cake

Ingredients
  

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour sifted
  • 2 cups brown sugar packed firmly
  • 2/3 cup butter room temperature
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon for cake batter
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 2 eggs well beaten
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon for streusel topping

Instructions
 

  • Preheat oven to 400°F and grease a 9x13-inch baking pan.
  • In a large bowl, combine flour, brown sugar, butter, and salt until crumbly and evenly mixed.
  • Set aside 3/4 cup of the crumb mixture for the streusel topping and stir 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon into it.
  • To the remaining mixture, add cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, baking powder, and baking soda.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk eggs and buttermilk together. Add to dry ingredients and stir just until combined.
  • Spread batter evenly into prepared pan and sprinkle streusel topping over the entire surface.
  • Bake at 400°F for 5 minutes, then reduce oven temperature to 350°F and continue baking for 15 minutes more.
  • Cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

Notes

For extra crumb topping, double the reserved streusel mixture. Delicious served warm with coffee or tea.
