Ingredients

  • 6 slices bacon chopped
  • 1 medium head of cabbage cored and sliced
  • 1 onion thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil optional
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar optional
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped bacon until crispy. Remove the bacon from the skillet and set aside, leaving the bacon grease in the pan.
  • Add the sliced onion to the skillet and sauté until translucent, about 3–4 minutes.
  • Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  • Add the sliced cabbage to the skillet, stirring to coat it in the bacon grease. Cook for about 10–15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the cabbage is tender and slightly browned.
  • Season with salt and pepper. For added richness, stir in olive oil. For a tangy note, add apple cider vinegar.
  • Return the crispy bacon to the skillet and stir to combine.
  • Serve hot, garnished with additional black pepper if desired.

Notes

For added heat, toss in a pinch of red pepper flakes with the garlic. You can also swap the bacon for turkey bacon or smoked sausage for a twist on the classic.
