Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter cold and cut into cubes
  • 6 tbsp ice water
  • 4 cups apples peeled, cored, and thinly sliced (Granny Smith recommended)
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice freshly squeezed
  • 1 egg beaten with 1 tbsp water for egg wash

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a 9x13-inch baking dish with parchment paper.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour and salt. Cut in cold butter using a pastry cutter or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  • Gradually add ice water, mixing just until dough holds together. Divide dough in half and chill for 15 minutes.
  • In a separate bowl, toss apples with sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Set aside.
  • Roll out one half of the dough and press into the prepared dish to form the bottom crust.
  • Spread the apple filling evenly over the crust.
  • Roll out the remaining dough and lay over the apple filling. Crimp edges to seal and cut small slits in the top to vent.
  • Brush top crust with egg wash. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.
  • Cool completely in the pan before slicing into bars.

Notes

Add a drizzle of vanilla glaze after baking for extra sweetness or serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
