If we treated healthy food like junk, more kids would eat—and enjoy—it.
I’m not talking about junking up healthy food. Or healthifying junk food. I’m talking about how we talk about healthy food. I’m talking about the sell. Because what children think about healthy food determines whether they’ll eat healthy food. It’s all about the mindset.
In my last post, I wrote about the importance of giving your dishes creative and enticing names. Twisted Glazed Carrots. But maybe you’re not into creating menu-quality names? That’s OK. The most creative name I ever dreamed up is Egg-Overs. And when I tell you what Egg-Overs is, you won’t think I’m creative at all. Leftovers with a fried egg on top. (It’s really quite delicious.)
We have abdicated all the good tasting words to junk.
- Think about the reasons we give for eating healthy. Energy. Health. Growing.
- Now think about the reasons we give for eating chocolate cake. Delicious. Creamy. Rich. Moist. Buttery.
Which description makes you salivate?
Do an Internet search for Reasons to eat brussels, sprouts. Look what comes up.
- Fiber. …
- Folate. …
- Antioxidants and More. …
Next, do an Internet search for Reasons to eat ice cream. Sounds crazy, I know. (And that says a lot.) What you get is either, emotional reasons like “sad” or fun reasons like “There’s no reason not to,” “So many flavors!”
If you want your children to enjoy eating healthy food you have to show them that healthy foods taste good. And then deliver.
- Give healthy food as much flavor as possible. Skip the steaming.
- Tell children what healthy food tastes like, not how healthy it is.
- Give healthy foods, what I call, The Chocolate Cake Look.
